A Historic Weekend in DC
America’s capital city is filled with fun activities and historical sights for the whole family! From iconic monuments and memorials, historic museums, and gorgeous gardens, there are so many beautiful DC spots. Keep reading for a concise and planned weekend or 2 day trip to DC.
Day 1
Depending on the weather, the best way to get around DC and see the sights is to bike or use an electric scooter. I recommend starting you day at the Tidal Basin and checking out the Jefferson Memorial. The memorial is open at all times of the day for visitors to head inside and check out the statute of former president Thomas Jefferson along with the hundreds of inscriptions on the walls.
Then make your way to one of the many amazing museums that DC has to offer. For your first day, I recommend spending the afternoon in the Museum of Natural History. You can easily spend a whole day here, checking out exhibits like the Hall of Mammals or go prehistoric and check out the Hall of Fossils.
Venture outside again and check out the United States Capitol Building (tours only run on the weekdays so be sure to find time on Friday or Monday if you want a guided tour of the monument). Steps from the Capitol Building is the Library of Congress. Be sure to check out the beautiful architecture of the reading rooms! Inside the library you can find self guided audio tours that provide the history of famous books and fun facts about the structure. As you exit the library, youll find the United States Supreme Court across from you. Though the inside is not open to the public, you are able to walk up the steps of the court and around the exterior.
End your day with a leisurely walk through the National Portrait Gallery. The Gallery hosts a complete collection of portraits of U.S Presidents as well as famous works from prominent American artists.
Day 2
Start your day at the National Air and Space Museum. This museum features over 60,000 objects and houses some of the most significant aviation and aerospace artifacts in the world! From flight simulators to trying freeze dried ice cream, you can easily spend 2 hours exploring this museum.
Head on over to see The White House, home to the President of the United States. Please note that tours of the white house need to planned and booked months in advance and a tour of the White House Garden is only available to the public twice a year in April and October.
If you are feeling inspired by the White House and want to immerse yourself in some more American History, I recommend heading to the National Archives. Famous documents in American History are stored here including: U.S Constitution, Bill of Rights and Declaration of Independence.
End your day with a leisurely walk through the National Mall. Stop by the Reflecting Pool to snap some beautiful pictures of the National Monument. This is a great place to sit and grab a snack or drink and soak up the atmosphere. Head up to the Lincoln Memorial to watch the most beautiful sunset over the National Monument. Spend some time walking around the statue of Lincoln and admiring the words of wisdom inscribed around the dome.
