How to Spend your Layover in Istanbul
Do you have a long layover at Istanbul Airport? If you have 10 hours or more then I highly recommend getting out of the airport and into the beautiful and bustling city of Istanbul!
If you get in on an early morning flight, I suggest grabbing a hostel for the day so you have somewhere to freshen up and store your luggage as you make your way around the city!
Morning: Traditional Turkish Breakfast and the Topkapi Palace
After resting and showering at our hostel, we started the day with a full spread of Traditional Turkish Breakfast at Hotel Valide Sultan. We were seated in their rooftop dining area that had incredible views of the water and city. We drank a few cups of piping hot Turkish coffee and set out to explore for the day.
In between bouts of rain, we were able to do a full tour of the Topkapi Palace. The museum features collections from the Ottoman Empire and gorgeous architecture. Walking through the museum will feel like a leisurely stroll through the park. Make your way to the overlook that has an unreal view of the city.
Afternoon: The Sultanahmet District
The Sultanahmet is Istanbuls “Old Town” area, featuring the world famous Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque. Both do not require an entrance fee as they are mosques and meant to be free to all. It is required however that everyone come into the temple with clothes that cover their shoulders and knees. Women also will be seen covering their head and neck with a scarf.
If you have the time, sit and take in the peaceful environment at the Hagia Sophia and listen to a recitation. The Blue Mosque is a bit smaller and quieter than the Hagia Sophia, but definitely worth stopping by and learning the history.
Evening: Grand Bazaar and Spice Market
The Grand Bazaar has been around since 1461 and features over 4000 shops. This a great place for shopping from leather goods to carpets and of course souvenirs. Be prepared to haggle and to tell persistent shop owners you are not interested.
From the Grand Bazaar, the famous Spice Market is only a 7 minute walk away. This is a great place to buy many kinds of Turkish delight and freshly made baklava.
