Spend 5 Perfect Days in Portugal
Welcome to the captivating world of Portugal, a country brimming with vibrant cities, rich history, and breathtaking landscapes. Prepare to be mesmerized as you explore the iconic destinations of Lisbon, Sintra, and Porto.
Day 1: Lisbon
Start your day with a strong Portuguese coffee and a delicious pastel de nata at Manteigaria cafe. Trying Pastel de nata (custard tarts) was one of my favorite experiences in Portugal.
Visit the historic district of Alfama, Lisbon's oldest neighborhood, known for its narrow streets, colorful tiled facades, and hidden alleyways. Embrace the challenge of navigating the steep hills (don't worry, there's always a reward at the top).
Take a tram ride on one of Lisbon's famous vintage yellow trams and hold on tight as the tram navigates the narrow streets and steep hills of Lisbon. Enjoy the scenic views of the city as you make your way to the trendy neighborhood of Bairro Alto. Check out the local shops, art galleries, and hipster cafes and don't be surprised if you stumble upon a spontaneous street performance.
End your day with a visit to Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, one of Lisbon's most picturesque viewpoints, for stunning panoramic views of the city.
Day 2: Lisbon
Begin Day 2 with a visit to Belém, a historic district of Lisbon known for its iconic landmarks. Marvel at the Belém Tower, a fortress overlooking the Tagus River, and the nearby Jerónimos Monastery. I recommend grabbing lunch at the Time Out Market, a lively food hall located in a historic market building. There is a wide range of food stalls offering diverse cuisines. It is a great place to visit if you want to try Portugese fare with a modern twist.
Spend your night visiting Pink Street, also known as Rua Nova do Carvalho. This famous street located in the Cais do Sodré neighborhood is known for its lively nightlife scene and is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. The pink pavement of the street is lined with neon lights, which create a colorful and vibrant ambiance.
Day 3: Sintra and Cabo Da Roca
Start your day early and make your way to the iconic Pena Palace. Arrive before the crowds to fully appreciate the colorful turrets, ornate details, and panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Explore the palace's lush gardens, grottos, and hidden pathways.
Next, grab lunch on the go and explore the Initiation Well, an architecturally cool structure! This inverted tower with a spiral staircase is one of the oldest structures in Sintra with a mysterious history.
Spend the rest of the day in Cabo da Roca, (a short drive or bus ride away) the westernmost point of mainland Europe. I recommended spending some time on the coastal walk, taking in the water views. If you’re feeling adventurous, embark on the hike to Praia da Ursa. This hike ends with the most stunning beaches and views of dramatic cliffs along the way! Note: the trail does not have a lot of markers so be careful to go down while there is a lot of daylight left.
Day 4: Porto
Start your day with a visit to Livraria Lello, known as one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world. It’s beautiful architecture and grand staircase are a great place to spend your morning. Take a walk to Clérigos Tower, an iconic landmark of Porto. Climb to the top for panoramic views of the city and the river.
Next, head to Ribeira, the historic district of Porto, and wander through its narrow streets lined with colorful buildings. Don't forget to snap some Instagram-worthy shots of the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge and the picturesque Douro River!
End your day with a visit to the São Bento Railway Station. This station is known for its ornate tile panels depicting scenes from Portuguese history.
Day 5: Porto
Head out early and explore the Crystal Palace Gardens, a beautiful park with stunning views of the Douro River and the city. Take a leisurely stroll among the trees, fountains, and sculptures. Make your way to the river edge and take a boat cruise on the Douro River, where you can admire the picturesque landscape of Porto's vineyards and terraced hillsides.
Spend your afternoon visiting the Church of São Francisco, a Gothic church known for its ornate baroque interior and the Palácio da Bolsa, a neoclassical building that houses the Porto Stock Exchange. Make sure you ttop by the stunning Arabian Hall, decorated with exotic motifs!
For dinner, head to the Foz do Douro neighborhood, known for its seafood restaurants. Enjoy fresh seafood dishes (namely the saltwater cod) while taking in the sunset along the Atlantic Ocean!
