Top 5 Things to do in Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town is, by far, one of the best places I have ever visited. The mix of culture and nature in this cosmopolitan city was absolutely breathtaking, and I was blown away by the number of cool activities there were to do. Let’s look at the top 5 things to do in the southern most city in Africa.

  1. Visit the Cape of Good Hope: This historic and scenic landmark marks the tip of the African continent, where you can take in the amazing views of the Indian ocean. There are some awesome cliffside walks here that spy the iconic lighthouse that would guide travelers from Europe as they set sail towards India & Asia centuries ago.

  2. See Penguins on Boulders Beach: Thought you could only see penguins in Antarctica? Think again! In the Cape Town suburb of Simon’s Town, Boulders Beach is home to hundreds of penguins simply waddling and swimming on the shore. You can get up close to the penguins, feed them food, and really interact with these amazing birds.

  3. Summit Table Mountain: The sunrise hike on Table Mountain was one of the greatest hikes I have ever taken, with the views up in the clouds being breathtaking. There is a cable car ride option to the top as well, and regardless of how you get there, be sure to enjoy the view up at the top of the other major mountains in the range: Devil’s Peak and Lion’s Head.

  4. Visit the Vineyards in Stellenbosch: This is the heart of South Africa’s wine country, modeled after Cape Dutch architecture. There are a ton of vineyards you will be able to tour and all of them offer exceptional wine tastings and history lessons about their facilities.

  5. Learn at Robben Island: The prison that once held Nelson Mandela, Robben Island is a critical part of South Africa’s history and serves as a poignant reminder of their struggle against apartheid. A ferry ride from the V&A Waterfront takes you to the island where former prisoners often guide the tours, offering their personal and historical insights of their time on Robben Island. I found the experience not just educational but deeply moving and a must-do when visiting Cape Town.

Hope you find your trip to Cape Town as intellectually & energetically engaging as I did!
